WIFS prog launched in West Garo Hills

 SHILLONG: The District Level Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) Programme cum ARSH Extravaganza was launched at, Tura on Tuesday by Parliamentary Secretary in charge of Health and Family Welfare, Sengnam Marak.

The WIFS programme, initiated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is meant for school going adolescent girls and boys studying in classes VI to XII and the long term goal of WIFS is to break the inter-generational cycle of anaemia.

Addressing the gathering, Marak said that imbalanced diet and faulty food habits, malaria and worm infestation contribute to the prevalence of anaemia.

He informed that WIFS is a unique intervention of the Government of India to address the problem of iron deficiency and anaemia.

He urged the different stakeholders to work in convergence for the successful implementation of the WIFS programme.

Later the chief guest distributed prizes to winners of an essay competition that was held as part of the sensitization programme of WIFS.

The chief guest and other dignitaries also ingested a tablet each to remove apprehension and fear from the minds of those who present on the occasion.
