Top GNLA cadre held in Assam

 Shillong: Based on intelligence inputs provided by Meghalaya Police, the Army on Tuesday apprehended Rahul Marak , an area commander of GNLA at Hahim under Boko sub-division. Marak is the area commander of Hahim area and was coming to the Hahim market to collect extortion money. Tired of the highhandedness of Rahul and GNLA cadres the people of the area informed Meghalaya Police about the presence of Rahul and his cadres in Hahim market. As the area falls under Assam, the Army was requested to act immediately. Accordingly army conducted a raid in Hahim market.

After a brief exchange of fire between army and GNLA , Rahul was apprehended. The army recovered one pistol , magazines and Rs 50,000 from the militant.

Rahul was earlier with LAEF and operated in North Garo Hills areas. When police neutralised the LAEF he joined GNLA and spent time in the general camp of GNLA in Durama jungles. He was supervising the training of new recruits. Rahul was area commander of Hahim-Malangkona area from July 2013 and is operating in this area. There have been several cases of kidnapping, murder and extortion lodged against Marak in North Garo Hills and also in other districts of the region. The Army and police are conducting combing operations in Malangkona area to apprehend other GNLA cadres.
