SHILLONG: Seven years after Mawryngkneng Police Outpost was updated into a full-fledged police station, Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Wednesday formally inaugurated the police station, which is expected to go a long way in easing the burden of the Madanriting Police Station.

The Mawryngkneng police outpost was upgraded to a police station in August, 2007. However, construction of the building to house the police station began much later on a plot of land donated by the Mawryngkneng Dorbar Shnong. The building was constructed by the Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation (MGCC) at an estimated amount of Rs 52 lakh.

With the inauguration of the police station, the State Government is now looking forward to include this police station under the ambit of the Crime and Criminal Networking System (CCNS) to track down unwanted criminal activities. The police station, to be led by its first Officer In-charge, E Pala, will cater to many areas including Sohryngkham, Puriang and half of the Shillong By-pass stretch.

Delivering the inaugural address, Warjri stressed on the need to develop the police-public relationship to ensure that peace and tranquility is maintained in the area. She encouraged the public to consider the police as their ‘guardians of peace’.

Terming the police as the ‘eyes and the ears of the public’, Kropha said that it is the responsibility of the police to report to the higher up on the needs and grievances of the people in terms of law and order situation.

“The police should undertake the challenge of instilling a sense of security and confidence amongst the people to gain the trust and support of the public,” he added.
