SHILLONG: The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Khliehriat, D Phawa received fake currency notes from an SBI ATM which compelled her to file a complaint with the police.
According to the police, Phawa lodged a complaint at Khliehriat police station that on August 27 at about 3 pm, she withdrew Rs. 10,000 from SBI ATM, Secretariat Branch. Later, it transpired that ten numbers of Rs 100 currency notes were fake notes.
Meanwhile, sources from the SBI has stated such an occurrence is impossible in the SBI as mechanisms have been put in place to check, double check and manage the currency notes before they are deposited in any ATM or distributed to all the branches.
The source also mentioned that there is a separate cell in the SBI Shillong Branch for currency management and collection. “It is only after going through a detailed and thorough process that the notes are being distributed from SBI main branch to all the other SBI branches in the State,” the source added.
