catapultSHILLONG: Catapults and stones have become handy for the pro-ILP activists during the ongoing agitation with the ban on loose petrol which was used to make bombs to target the Government and public properties.

On September 2, two HNYF activists were picked up for targeting a vehicle with catapults, pellets and stones. The vehicle was partially damaged.

The general secretary of KSU, Nongmynsong was also arrested by the police for the possession of a catapult and stones on September 7 night.

The worry of the police is that catapults can be used with stones from anywhere hidden and it can cause damage to the vehicles. When asked whether police have conducted any raid to detect the catapults and stones, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the city patrolling teams are always on the move to keep strict vigils on such weapons being carried on board any vehicles or persons.

“Many people found with catapults and stones in their pockets or cars late night were being rounded up because, it is obvious that no person will carry a catapult to shoot a bird at night,” he asserted.

When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that so far, no ban has been imposed on catapults because 144 CrCP has already been imposed in this regard which stated that actions will be initiated against those people found carrying materials likely to cause destruction and damage to humans and properties.
