Withdrawal of funds for Sohra Eco Restoration Project

SHILLONG: Sohra legislator Tistosstarwell Chyne has slammed the State Government for withdrawing the funds earmarked for the Sohra Eco Restoration Project. The government had on Monday decided to withdraw the budget provision of Rs 27 crore meant for the project citing financial constraints.

“The Government cannot divert the funds for the Sohra project since it has come from the Planning Commission,” Chyne said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Rs 87 crore was earmarked for the Sohra Eco Restoration Project.

According to Chyne, the withdrawal of funds would have a huge impact on the implementation of the ongoing scheme, especially the construction of dams and tree plantation.

“Over 500 people would be jobless on account of the decision of the Government,” the Sohra legislator said adding that he would take up the matter with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma besides raising the issue during the upcoming Assembly session.

While refusing to accept that the State Government is facing financial constraints, Chyne said that Chief Minister has always insisted that the financial health of the State is good.
