Murder convict dies in jail

Morigaon (Assam): One murder convict died due to illness at the district jail here on Wednesday, police said. Narayan Dev Nath, aged 60 years, was suffering from high fever for the last seven days and died in early morning at the Morigaon district jail. Nath was convicted in a murder case and was serving life imprisonment for about 18 months. (PTI)

State-level science exhibition held at Kohima

Kohima: The students from across Nagaland converged at the state-level Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Science Exhibition here on Tuesday under the aegis of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). According to official sources today, Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education and SCERT Deo Nukhu appreciated all the participants and said they were the future scientists of the state and the country. Encouraging students to pay more attention to mathematics and science, he advised them to take up careers in the sciences and contribute to the growth of the state and the country. e also expressed hope that some of the children would rise to become scientists and be recognised internationally. ources said a total of 136 students put up various exhibits at the event, which was sponsored by Union Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. Four persons from Nagaland killed in road accident in Assam

Kohima: Four persons, all in their 20s including a woman, died on the spot while one person was critically injured, who succumbed to injuries in Dimapur, in a tragic accident at Gautam Basti along NH 29 at Khatkhati in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Tueday. According to sources here on Wednesday the accident occurred on Tuesday late afternoon, when an Assam registered passenger bus reportedly collided head on with a Dimapur bound Maruti Gypsy. One of the deceased was a woman identified as Moipen alias Naro (28) a policewoman from Yongnyah village under Longleng district. The other two were identified as Nungsangkaba (26) and Nyethong (26) of Alayong village under Tuensang district. The injured was a woman, identified as Moala (40), mother of the deceased Moipen, who later succumbed to her injuries in Dimapur. All four were traveling in the Maruti Gypsy from Longleng to Dimapur via Assam as Moipin along with her friends were on their way to Dimapur to obtain medical treatment for Moipin’s sick mother, Moala. The case has since been handed over to the Khatkati Assam Police as it was under the Assam jurisdiction. The bus is detained and is kept under Assam police supervision while further investigations was going on. (UNI)

PCI writes to Nagaland CM to look into state media

Kohima: The Press Council of India (PCI) has adopted the theme ‘Role of Media in Serving Public Interest’ for its National Press Day 2013 to be observed on November 16. According to official sources today PCI Chairman Justice Markandey Katju extended his greetings to the Media fraternity of of Nagaland with the diction ‘Freedom with Responsibility’ in his letter dated August 14. Addressed to the chief minister, the Chairman expressed the need for the Media to highlight issues of economy and poverty, employment and education, health and infrastructure instead of sensational and trivial, or celebrity and gossips. He reminded the fraternity on the adherence of journalistic codes of ethics for fairness, authenticity and public interest. This theme has been chosen by him to introspect into its defined role of ‘in service of Public Interest’. The PCI will confer national awards to journalists and photographers and freelancers on National Press Day. (UNI)

Nagaland consumers’ body tours against illegal tax

Kohima: Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) conducted a district tour campaign against illegal taxation in Tuensang town with district administration, civil societies, churches and college students. According to a release issued by the NVCO yesterday, the team led by NVCO president Kezhokhoto Savi was on a four-day tour to the district, which concluded on Tuesday and submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Tuensang. The NVCO president highlighted the scenario of illegal taxation in the state in detail and also shared the various problems faced by general public in various districts in the state. (UNI)
