SHILLONG: Principal Secretary (Home) KS Kropha on Friday informed that the Committee headed by Chief Secretary WMS Pariat has almost finalized the Draft Tenancy Bill.

The Bill is being considered by the State Government as an alternate to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) which is being demanded by pressure groups of the State to check influx.

“The Committee has more or less finalized the Draft and then it will be submitted before the Government,” Kropha informed. Reacting to a query, he said that it is not necessary to place the Bill before the Cabinet, while adding that the Government would hold consultations with different stakeholders for feedback on the Draft tenancy Bill.

“We would like to implement it as soon as possible,” he asserted.

The Bill among others things, aims at verifying the antecedents of people who stay in rented accommodations in the State.

The Government is affirmative that the proposed Bill would prove to be an effective mechanism to check influx of illegal migrants.
