Innocents falling prey to militants’ bullets in Garo Hills

TURA: The ongoing cycle of killings of innocent villagers by unidentified men and militant groups continues in the Garo Hills with another village elder murdered in Bajengdoba region of North Garo Hills district on Sunday night.

Fifty-year-old Minseng Marak of Rongjaleng village died of grievous head injuries caused by sharp weapons after a group of men took him away seeking directions to the home of the village headman.

Four unidentified men came up to the victim’s residence at around 8 pm on Sunday night and asked him to lead them to the house of the village Nokma.

When he failed to return home later that night his family members went out in search of him only to find his body in a paddy field a few hundred meters from the residence. He never reached the Nokma’s house and the killers had by then disappeared after committing the heinous crime.

The incident comes just a month after another villager was murdered in similar fashion at Anogre region which connects Bajengdoba through the main national highway.

Fifty-year-old Donjeng Ch Sangma of Cheksagre village, 18 kms from Anogre, was heading back home on August 12th when unidentified killers waylaid him. His mutilated body was recovered the next morning along the village road.

Another fifty-year-old villager of Koksi Nengsak village in Songsak, East Garo Hills, Simon Ch Marak, was dragged out of his home and shot dead by suspected GNLA militants on August 9. The militants had branded the village elder a police ‘informer’ and executed him.

Three days before Simon’s murder, another group of militants entered Rongchek Akong village of East Garo Hills, and executed village elder Hawart G Momin over a similar charge.

Again, on 20th of last month, GNLA militants dragged out 47 year old Jenifar N Sangma of Rangmai village in Ruga area of Chokpot, and shot him dead accusing him of collaborating with security forces.

They also attacked his teenage son grievously injuring him.
