ILP stir: Office picketing today

SHILLONG: Government employees are set to enjoy almost a week-long ‘holiday’ in view of the ongoing agitation of the pressure groups demanding the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

The pro-ILP activists have announced a series of agitation this week starting with office picketing and night road blockade on September 17 and 19 to be followed by a 24-hour bandh on September 20.

The employees would also get an official holiday on September 18 on account of Unitarian Day and offices in all probability would resume on September 23 unless the Government directs the staff members to attend office on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills district administration has made elaborate security arrangements in view of the office picketing.

“The officers have completed the detailing of the sensitive areas where Government offices are located. We would be putting enough forces in such areas to prevent any untoward incident,” East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said here on Monday.

Section 144 imposed: Meanwhile, the district administration has also imposed section 144 CrPC in the entire district in view of the agitation programme of the pressure groups.

The order prohibits assembly of five or more persons with a view to hold hunger strike or carrying of arms and any other lethal weapons.
