Guwahati: BJP national president Rajnath Singh on Wednesday inaugurated a meeting of the party’s North-East Working Group and North-East Campaign Committee in Guwahati.

The meeting has been called to take stock of the party’s preparation in the North-East for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Singh highlighted the strategic importance of North-East region and said under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee DoNER Ministry was created and development activities increased in the region, a party statement said.

Singh also highlighted the focus of the BJP’s campaign for the North-East was peace, progress and prosperity.

BJP general secretary (Organisation) Ramlal said the party has always accorded high priority for the North-East.

“This is evident from the fact that the BJP’s national president has called this meeting at the beginning of a series of meetings that he is holding across the country for preparation of the Lok Sabha elections specially after the announcement of BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi,” Ramlal said.

North-East Working Committee is chaired by senior BJP leader SS Ahluwalia and the members include Tapir Gaon, Prakash Javadekar, Bijoya Chakravarty, Padmanabh Acharya, P Chandrashekhar, Suni Deodhar, Kiran Rijju and Nalin S Kohli.

The meeting was being attended by the BJP Assam unit president and all senior leaders of North-East states.

BJP president Rajnath Singh on Wednesday demanded imposition of President’s Rule in Uttar Pradesh in view of the communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar.

“Consisering the situation, there seems to be no option but to impose President’s Rule in Uttar Pradesh”, Singh told reporters here.

“The Government of India must intervene and start strict proceedings against the Samajwadi Party-led government in U P. Action should be taken based on the facts of a TV channel’s sting operation Tuesday on the communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas”, he said.

“If no action is taken against the Samajwadi Party government there, then people will be compelled to believe that there is a nexus between Congress and SP in the communal clashes”, the BJP chief said.

“There are communal feelings…through divide and rule policy Congress wants to remain in power”, Singh said.

The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas recently claimed 47 lives and displaced over 40,000 people.

Singh is in Guwahati to discuss with BJP’s Northeast leaders the strategy and agenda for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. (Agencies)
