AFC license coaching course

SHILLONG: The AFC ‘C’ license coaching course of the All India Football Federation will be held in Shillong in December. Candidates within the jurisdiction of the Shillong Sports Association willing to undergo the course may contact the office of the Association on or before September 24 for details of the course. The Association can recommend only two candidates to the Meghalaya Football Association for the course. Meanwhile, Mawlai SC will play Pohkseh SC in the first match of the Imperial Blue Shillong Premiere League at 12 pm on Saturday. Later Langsning FC will take on Nangkiew Irat SC at 3.15 PM at the J.N. Complex.

Chance for Yuvraj-led India A to regain lost ground

Bangalore: Having suffered a surprise defeat in the unofficial ODI series, it will be an opportunity for the Yuvraj Singh-led India ‘A’ to regain some of the lost ground when they lock horns with the West Indies ‘A’ in the one-off Twenty20 match here on Saturday. The 1-2 series loss was a rare failure for India A, who had whitewashed their counterparts from New Zealand 3-0 prior to the just-concluded ODI rubber against the Caribbeans. The key for the hosts once again will be Yuvraj, who has had a remarkable success with the willow in the 50-over format, slamming an 89-ball century and following that up with knocks of 40 and 61 in the last two matches. In his quest to earn a recall to the Indian team, the stylish left-hander will look to continue in the same vein in the remainder of the series, which also includes three unofficial Tests. With the kind of form and fighting abilities the visitors displayed in the ODI series, Yuvraj and his men would be wary of their opponents. As a whole, India have performed reasonably with the bat. Agnieszka Radwanska reaches Korea Open semifinals

UNDATED: Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland overpowered Russia’s Vera Dushevina 6-2, 6-0 to secure a semifinal berth at the Korea Open on Friday. The world number four will meet Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena, who broke local hearts by ending the run of wildcard entry Jang Su-Jeong 6-0, 6-4. The third quarterfinal also saw the end of an impressive run by veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan, who will celebrate her 43rd birthday later this month. Krumm, who had claimed the scalp of second-seed Maria Kirilenko to reach the quarterfinal stage, took that form into her match with Italy’s Francesca Schiavone, winning the first set 6-4. But the former French Open champion hit back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. “It was very tough,” Schiavone said. “Date was really strong and she deserved to win the first set, but fortunately I managed to get back in the match.” The Italian will meet third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semis after the Russian comfortably saw off Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-2, 6-2.
