Agartala: Agartala Cycle Club (ACC) has celebrated World Car Free (WCF) Day on Sunday with a clarion call to reduce the use of fuel driven motorised vehicle considering the state of global environment and economic condition of India.

While celebrating the day ACC has submitted a comprehensive parking policy to the state government for its implementation for better city life as well as to promote non-motorised bi-cycle and tri-cycle rickshaw.

As part of the celebration ACC held poster painting competition among the student this morning on the promotion of non-motorised, pollution-free mode of transportation and encourage buses instead of small cars.

Hundreds of citizens join voluntary cycling on the street afternoon to mark the day organised by ACC with the demand to demarcate a specific lane on the major streets for cyclists and rickshaws besides, ensuring encroachment free footpaths.

In the interaction programme on Cycling for health and environment in the sideline of the painting competition, the experts suggested to avoid motorised mode of transportation at least for small distance for good health.

“Unfortunately, we are living in such a dogmatic situation where cycling is considered to be derogatory to the prestige instead we educated affluent class prefer to go to gym everyday on schedule for cycling to reduce body energy,” President ACC Dr Mihir Kumar Das said.

He alleged that a section of our society was completely misguided because of money.

They were eating much either under influence of taste or gain enough energy but later reducing the extra energy they had been going to gym, which was found ridicules’.

There are good reasons to voluntarily give up use of vehicle on car free day especially keeping in view the rising oil import bill, widening current account deficit and dwindling value of Indian rupee, Dr Das contemplated adding even though the impact of such a voluntary gesture on the overall scheme of things may be marginal, the message it will send across the society will have a lasting value.

ACC also demanded the state government to celebrate tomorrow as car holiday for the government and urged to announce every Monday as car restricted day for the public sector. (UNI)
