Editor,

I convey my appreciation to the present West Garo Hills District Administration for their bold action against the rowdy bunchs of goons who had been holding the people of Tura and Garo Hills at ransom for years. The MLA of Chokpot, his GNC and TGCSU supporters, have been creating ruckus and disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of Tura and Garo Hills.

Have they ever thought of the consequences of the bandhs in the heartland of Garo Hills? The only losers and sufferers are the A’chiks and NOT the non-Garo as presumed. Many A’chik school students are being deprived of quality education because of frequent bandhs and road blockades thereby hampering their performance at National Level competitions. How many A’chik students have excelled in State and National Competitions? Many poor A’chik patients have lost their lives, due to bandhs and road blockades forcing them to die quietly in their homes in the villages. A’chik daily wage earners and their family members go hungry as they could not earn their livelihood for days.

The Anti Social Activities of Tura Govt. College Students’ Union (TGCSU) have been observed for years, yet the parents, the college authorities and education department does not take any action. The TGSCU activities are outside the purview of Tura Govt. College and should be banned. In fact TGCSU should be dissolved by the College authorities and Education department as TGCSU members are openly indulging in the following illegal and anti national activities:-

The TGCSU members have for years been extorting and collecting money from businessmen in Tura market in the name of development of Tura Govt. College, some cultural functions, study tours etc. The College authorities are well aware of this collection or extortion drive, yet they remain mute spectators. A teacher is supposed to teach a student what is Right and What is Wrong but the teachers of Tura Govt. College seem to be teaching the students to collect money from the bazaar and to create law and order problem instead of grooming them to excel in their studies become great human beings.

The TGCSC students by calling bandhs and participating in bandh and road blockades are responsible for depriving the student community of their college studies and entire Garo Hills of learning, instead of requesting the NGO and other groups to allow the students to attend classes. TGCSU is anti-students’ and anti education Group. How many students of Tura Govt. College brought laurels for their college and the District or State in the last 10 years. All they have done is brought a bad image for the students of the College and Garo Hills.

Every year TGCSU will be in the news for creating unrest in Tura and their activities are not confined to College Campus alone. They get involved in politics, issues that do not concern the College or students. Their hostels have become the breeding ground for goons and criminals. Taking advantage of police leniency towards students, the hostel is being used for anti national activities and sheltering criminals on the run from police.

It is high time the people of Tura raise these issues and disallow people with criminal intentions who come to Tura in the guise of students and hold Tura to ransom and also tarnishing the image of Tura. The civilised people of Garo Hills are fed up with Bandhs called by NGOs and TGCSU. Shame on You TGCSU, Shame on you Tura Govt. College authorities for not controlling and teaching their students the right path. Shame on you Education Department for doing nothing to contain this hoologanism.

Fear factor still lurks about Pawan Hans

Editor,

Most people have not really overcome the trepidation of flying in Hans Pawans choppers simply because the machines they use in the North East are old, phased out (by corporate bodies/ entities which have served their usefulness elsewhere. It is something like Ambassador taxis in Kolkatta, Delhi or other small towns – you use it but don’t like it. To go further the public would like to know if Pawan Hans has made any compensation to the Govt of Meghalaya, the victims, the staff etc of the last crash in 2002. If not what is the Government doing about it. It would go a long way in assuaging the feelings of the people of Meghalaya. Remember lives are precious – even in Meghalaya.

BSNL in bad shape

Editor,

I would like to bring to the notice of whoever is in-charge of BSNL Broadband at 3rd mile, Upper Shillong, that the Broadband Internet had gone kaput since the 3rd week of August, which is more than a month now. This is a very frequent phenomenon here in 3rd mile, Upper Shillong. With a slight change of weather- windy, lightning or heavy rainfall, the internet is disrupted. Once it is gone due to power failure or failure of the circuit it takes three to four weeks to be restored. After a number of complaints, the answers we get are “card is gone”, “effect of thunder”, “will get repaired soon”, Everyone knows that internet is in constant need by students, teachers, researchers, etc. For this purpose we used to make annual payment of Rs.8550. When assessing the percentage of days without internet this year (2013, where 3/4 of the year is gone), it was almost 50%. In many cases we have to use our mobile SIM cards which doubles our expense for internet works. So, what will happen to the bill which we have paid in advance? Is there any chance of the internet being repaired soon?

My humble request to the official concerned – kindly take immediate action to solve the above mentioned problem

Yours etc.,

S. Nongbri,
