SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly condemned a recent statement of UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh, wherein he had mentioned that the UDP had ‘no intention to topple the State Government’ but simply wanted a change in leadership.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, MPCC general secretary Polycarp K Marak took a dig at Mawthoh saying that the UDP legislator should remember that one must have the requisite number in the Assembly to topple the Government.

Advising the UDP MLA to stay away from the internal matters of the Congress party, Marak said that the leadership issue is an internal issue of the Congress party and the UDP had no business talking about it. “The UDP MLA is advised not to strain his brain over the internal matters of the Congress party,” Marak stated.

The MPCC leader also took exception to Mawthoh’s comments that ‘the Chief Minister’s colleagues were unhappy with his style of functioning but they do not come out to the open’.

Marak reminded that during the recent meeting of the Congress-led MUA-II team, all the legislators had expressed total faith in the undisputed leadership of Dr Mukul Sangma as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

Marak also denounced Mawthoh’s comments that the Chief Minister was ‘irresponsible’ and ‘non committal,’ saying that the Congress party is commitment to address the core issue of influx and illegal immigration and visible measure have already been taken to the effect.

“It is reiterated that the party is duty bound to implement the promise and the pledges made in its manifesto, which is very clear and transparent,” Marak added.

The MPCC also reiterated that the Government would put in place effective and comprehensive mechanisms to address the issue of influx and illegal immigration.
