Three members of family commit suicide

Burdhwan: Three members of a family have committed suicide in West Bengal’s Burdhwan district. According to assistant police commissioner Sunil Yadav the three bodies that of Nepal Chakravarty (70) his wife Gita (65) and son Sukanta (41) were found hanging in their house at Jhandabag under Durgapur sub division on Sunday. The family members hanged themselves as Sukanta was a physically challenged man and his elderly parents found it hard to support him and the family, Yadav said. Further investigation is on. (PTI)

Bogie of express train derails in AP, no one hurt

Hyderabad: A bogie of Kanyakumari-Howrah Express derailed in the wee hours on Sunday when a cattle herd strayed on railway track near Kavali station. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident involving a second class luggage coach carrying around 25 passengers at the time of the incident, according to a South Central Railway (SCR) release. “Timely response by the railway engine personnel today averted a possible major mishap when four wheels of the coach of Kanyakumari-Howrah Express (No.12666), next to the engine, derailed between Sri Venkateshwarapalem and Kavali stations on Gudur-Vijayawada down-line section at 2:40 AM,” the release said. The incident occurred when a herd of cattle, strayed on railway track, was mowed down by the speeding train. “On noticing the herd on track, the driver immediately applied emergency brakes,” the release said. The train, running at a speed of around 72 kmph at the time of the incident, was deftly brought under control and stopped quickly by the loco pilots within a short distance, according to SCR. According to the release, four wheels of the coach derailed as they got entangled with the carcass of the cattle. “Around 25 passengers who were travelling in the affected coach were shifted by the onboard railway staff to adjacent coaches of the train,” the release said, adding that a accident relief train from Bitragunta immediately rushed to the spot. Over 200 redsanders logs seized; 45 arrested

Kadapa (AP): Forty-five people were arrested in Andhra Pradesh after police and forest officials conducted raids at seven forest areas across the state and seized 235 redsanders logs. According to forest officials, a team led by DFO Sivani Dogra, seized 39 redsanders logs and arrested 39 persons belonging to Allagadda of Kurnool district in K G Penta forest area on Saturday. Officials also seized two vans carrying banana and papaya fruits, 2 two-wheelers and two other vehicles besides Rs 60,000 cash from the smugglers. Forty-nine red sanders logs were seized in Mudumpadu beat and Kolimitta areas and four persons were held in this connection, said Forest Officer Abdul Khader. In Rajampeta, 30 redsanders logs and a van was seized. Also, two persons were arrested, forest officer Vijayakumar said. In Nandalur forest beat, 42 logs and a vehicle was seized by forest officials and two persons were arrested while Mydukur police seized 32 logs, 2 two-wheelers and arrested seven persons when they were transporting logs in an auto, said Circle inspector B V Siva Reddy. Rev Pream Prakash Habil is Agra Diocese Bishop

Agra: Rev Pream Prakash Habil has been elected as the Bishop of Agra Diocese of the Church of North India to succeed Samuel Rajkumar Cutting, who passed away after a heart attack. 57-year-old Rev Habil, who got 16 out of total 20 votes of the electoral board, will be ordained Bishop at St George’s Cathedral in the city on September 29, according to the Diocese office. Rev Habil, who was secretary of the Agra Diocese, will be the fifth Bishop of the Church of North India, which was formed from the old Anglican Church and a few other churches. Samuel Rajkumar Cutting had died of heart attack in a hospital here on May 8, months before his retirement in November this year. Agra Diocese, which looks after the whole of western UP and Uttarakhand, has some 70 churches, four hospitals, three postgraduate colleges and over fifty schools and intermediate colleges under its care, as also cemeteries formerly own and looked after by the Anglican Church. Three men robbed of Rs 9 lakh; all five accused held

Mathura: Three persons were allegedly robbed of Rs 9 lakh and other valuables by five car-borne men here, police said on Sunday. All the five robbers have been arrested and about Rs 7 lakh has been recovered from them, according to the police. Rajkumar, Dharmendra and their uncle Om Prakash, of Maant Jharangabad village in Aligarh district, were going to Bhopal via Mathura on Friday night to make a business-related payment when five men in a car blocked their car’s way, said police official Gulab Singh. The robbers snatched Rs 9 lakh and their watches and mobile phones and fled the scene, Singh said. The victims then approached the police and gave them the number of the accused’s car, following which nearby villages were searched and the accused were arrested on Saturday. (PTI)
