SHILLONG: The Achik Mother’s Association (AMA) unearthed role of miscreants responsible for charging high price of vegetables in the local market at Tura.

In a statement issued here, the leaders of AMA said that they surprised the traders by checking the wholesale market at Tura on Friday morning and discovered the imposition of ‘dadagiri’ taxes and series of manipulation by well known individuals.

“It is shameful to know how common people are being exploited as fair trade is controlled by people of high status using the local goons and militants”, the Association said.

Taking advantage of the recent communal conflict, certain people monopolised the supply of goods taxing the suppliers an amount not less than Rs. 5000 to 8000 and this resulted in massive escalation of vegetable price. “AMA is taking up the issue with the district administration to bring down the prices of vegetables and to encourage free and fair trade in the local markets”, the organisation said.

AMA also sought support from all concerned citizens to eliminate monopolies and agents who are exploiting the society.
