Yuki ends runner-up twice in Taiwan

Kaohsiung (Taiwan): Yuki Bhambri’s terrific run at the ATP Challenger tournament ended with runners-up finishes in both singles and doubles events, here on Sunday.

Yuki, who had qualified for the singles, played three matches on Sunday as rain had washed out Saturday’s singles semifinals.

The 21-year-old first knocked out second seed and world number 88 American Jack Sock 6-7 (10), 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinal, which lasted two hours 49 minutes.

After that energy-sapping contest, Yuki was up against local, top seed and world number 64 Yen-Hsun Lu in the title clash.

One needs to recover well before playing against such a tough opponent and perhaps it affected the Indian youngster as he lost the final rather tamely 4-6, 3-6 after one hour and six minutes.

Nevertheless Yuki earned a valuable 75 ranking points for his efforts.

Playing his third match of the day, Yuki and his Taiwan partner Chieh-Fu Wang lost the summit clash 2-6, 4-6 to top-60 doubles Colombian players Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah after one hour and seven minutes.

He earned 75 points for reaching the doubles final. (PTI)
