NONGPOH: Despite opposition from the local villagers, the State Bank of India (SBI) opened a branch in Sabuda, Raid Nongtung on Monday.
Sources said that the inauguration of the bank was done by the headman of Lakarew village Rajip Kamire who was accompanied by the president and secretary of the Peace and Development Committee Pius Sten and Lowis Mujai respectively.
Earlier, the Assam authorities had halted construction of the entrance gate and the SBI Bank building at Sabuda following protest from local people.
According to sources, the villagers were disappointed to see the members of the Peace and Development Committee supporting the inauguration of the bank against the wishes of the people of the area.
