Bid to set BDO office on fire foiled

Stray incidents mark night road blockade

SHILLONG: Stray incidents of arson were reported from some parts of the State as the pro-ILP group sponsored road blockade entered its second night on Tuesday.

In Mawryngkneng, a Police patrol team prevented pro-ILP arsonists from setting ablaze the BDO office during the wee hours of Tuesday. Police apprehended one Bankerlang Syiemlieh (27) who along with the general secretary of KSU Mawryngkneng circle, Peter Lawai attempted to burn the office.

According to police, one vehicle (ML 06 2771) entered the BDO’s office at around 1 am on Tuesday only to flee at the sight of the police. The cops, however, chased the vehicle and intercepted it at Mawmang. The vehicle was seized and the driver Syiemlieh was arrested and remanded in three-day police custody. Police are on the look-out for Lawai.

In a similar incident, unknown miscreants attempted to set on fire the office of the Fishery Department at Nongpyndeng, Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills during the wee hours of Tuesday. Quick intervention from the chowkidar (guard) of the office prevented the fire from spreading. Meanwhile, in another incident, unidentified miscreants assaulted one Satish Rabha (43) at Khyndailad at around 7.30 pm on Monday. The victim sustained injuries and was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital.

HNYF member arrested

The West Jaintia Police arrested one Ebris Syngkon from Mookynder area for obstructing vehicular movement on the first of the five-day night road blockade on Monday. Syngkon is a member of the National Hynniewtrep Youth Front (HNYF). Syngkon also obstructed a Tata Sumo used by a police patrolling party. Meanwhile, no untoward incident was reported till the filing of this report on the second day of the night road blockade in West Jaintia Hills. (With inputs from our Jowai correspondent)
