Jaintia Hills records 90 per cent attendance
SHILLONG: Normal functioning in some of the State government offices and financial institutions in the state was paralysed on the first day of the two-day office picketing called by the various pressure groups demanding the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system on Thursday.
The overall attendance was recorded at around 60 percent in the state with East Khasi Hills recording the lowest at 54 per cent.
The percentage of attendance in West Khasi hills was 75%, South West Khasi Hills – 85%, East Jaintia Hills – 95% and West Jaintia Hills is 66%.
According to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, the percentage of attendance in all the offices of the district has improved compared to the previous office picketing though some offices recorded a very thin attendance.
Sources informed that the attendance in the Deputy Commissioner’s office was relatively low with only 20 percent turnout.
Central government offices, banks and other financial institutions remained closed.
Several government employees decided to remain at home considering the fluid situation in the State. “So far, we have not received complaints of any employee being threatened or stopped,” Goyal said adding that tight security arrangements were made in every government office of the district.
Our Jowai Correspondent adds: The office picketing did have any impact in East and West Jaintia Hills District. Official sources said that the overall attendance in Jaintia Hills was 90 per cent.
However Central government offices and banking institutions remained closed.
Our Nongstoin Correspondent adds: The office picketing was partially successful in Nongstoin with staff turnout at Government establishments remaining at about 20 per cent.
While some of the offices chose to remain shut, others that were open had a very low turnout. However, the BDO Office and the DC’s Office of Nongstoin recorded good attendance.
