Driver gets six month jail term for mowing down elderly

Haridwar: A driver of Haridwar Municipality was sentenced to six month imprisonment for mowing down an elderly under his vehicle six years ago. Sentencing driver Dinesh Kumar to six month jail term on Friday, the CJM’s court also imposed a fine of Rs 2500 on him. A case had been lodged against Kumar by the victim’s brother in 2007, accusing him of reckless driving and mowing down his elder brother Keval Krishna. (PTI)

Walkathon to create awareness on health issues

Bangalore: A ‘Walkathon’ was organised to create awareness about ‘Preventive Heart Care’ on the occasion of ‘World Heart Day’ by Narayana Health on Saturday. Teacher accused for fake certificate

Howrah: Shyamal Ranjan Bose and Swapan Das, two assistant teacher of Howrah Aukshoy Shikshayatan have been accused for submitting fake M.Com certificate of Ranchi University. By submitting fake certificate, each of them already overdrawn about 6.5 lac rupees from Government. After commencement of new government in the state, Education Department issued a circular for the teachers to submit their qualification certificate all over the state. Every teacher except the two submitted their certificates. When the managing committee contacted Ranchi University they confirms that the certificates are fake. Then managing committee informed the entire matter to D.M, D.I. and Education minister. At last D.I. of Howrah has been advised to lodge a F.I.R. against them and collect the overdrawn amount by Treasury Challan after calculation from the duo. D.I. also has been advised to take disciplinary action against them. (UNI)

Cops arrested over under trial’s escape in UP

Varanasi: Six policemen, including a head constable, were on Saturday arrested over the escape of an under trial from police custody in Cantonment area of the Uttar Pradesh city last night. The guilty cops, including a head constable, have been nailed, police stated. Sunil Yadav, an under trial jailed under the Gangster Act, was being taken back to jail after a court hearing, when he hoodwinked the policemen and fled away. Police have launched a massive man-hunt to nab the absconding. (UNI)

Indian cuisine served on Qatar Airways flights

New York: Qatar Airways has started serving Indian cuisine on its flights in non-Indian routes thanks to the variety and popularity of dishes from the sub-continent. “Airline’s celebrated chef Vineet Bhatia, first Indian chef to receive a Michellin Star and his colleague Anuj Sood based in Doha, ensure that the best Indian cuisine- vegetarian and non-vegetarian- are served to passengers in most international flights,” said Qatar Airways officials. The officials made the remarks while addressing journalists to celebrate five-star dining and comfort onboard Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER at Washington Dulles International Airport tarmac. The event was held to showcase the airline’s award-winning Culinary World Menu. The evening was part of a series of events celebrating the airline’s ‘World’s Best Business Class’ Award. “Qatar Airways has a long tradition of offering a hospitable, personable five star signature service. We are glad to share our latest menu developments with visitors at the event,” said Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker. Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 16 years of operations, currently flying a modern fleet of 129 aircraft to 131 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. 2 get jail term for poisoning elephant

Haridwar: Two Van Gurjars living in Rajaji National Park area were sentenced to two years imprisonment by a local court for poisoning an elephant to death here 11 years ago. Alijan Gurjar and Bashir alias Bablu were awarded two year jail term each by the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Friday after they were convicted for poisoning an elephant to death in 2002, Counsel for the forest department Rajesh Tripathi said. Shafi, the third accused in the case was imposed a fine of Rs 1000 for acting as an accomplice in the crime. Alijan Gurjar and Bashir were arrested in August 2002 after being found in possession of 8 kgs of elephant tusks. (PTI)

Tibetans raise funds for flood victims

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh): Exiled Tibetans organised a cultural event here to raise funds for flood victims of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The event was organised in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage, said Tibetan activist and organizer Chimmie Rigzin. Exiled Tibetan lawmakers, activists from non-government organizations, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) attended the event. South American visitor Sisa Carolina praised the cooperation between Hindus and Tibetans in the field of culture and art. “I really like that the Hindu culture and Tibetan culture are working together. This is a very good opportunity to see how they are sharing their arts but also the projects and now I know more about this,” said Carolina. (PTI)
