JOWAI: Most of the cement companies operational in East Jaintia Hills have terminated hundreds of employees, both local and non-local, citing losses in revenue as the reason.

Sources informed that cement industries in East Jaintia Hills including Hills Cements, CMCL (Star Cement), Adhunik Cement – a subsidiary of Dalmia Cement Limited – and others are suffering losses.

The Star Cement has decided to terminate 70 staff members holding different posts while Adulhnik Cement (Dalmia) has terminated 170 employees.

The Hills Cement too has asked over a 100 staff members to tender their resignation.

Adhunik Cements was sold to Dalmia Bharat Cement Limited with a promise that none of its staff will be terminated, sources said.

“Barely six months after taking over the cement plant, the company (Adhunik) has terminated 170 of us despite written statement from the top officials that no one would be asked to leave”, one of the employees said on condition of anonymity.

The Company has also not spared senior officials hold senior post such as General Manager and other to resign from the company.

Meanwhile, cement plant officials also alleged that local employees, particularly those from cement plant areas like Chiehruphi, Thangskai, Wahiajer and Lumshnong village besides others hardly attended their duties.

“They are employed but we never seen them.

“They just come to draw their salary at the end of each month,” a cement plant official alleged.

Reliable sources have informed that in Meghalaya Cement Limited about 27 locals were employed as security guards but they never turned up for duty.
