SHILLONG: The Greater Laban Community Development Society has requested Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and other NGOs to refrain from holding agitations during the upcoming festive season beginning this month.

In a letter shot off to KSU president Daniel Khyriem, the Greater Laban Community Development Society secretary A Marwein urged the students’ union to exempt from agitations during Durga Puja (October 10-14), Id Ul Zuha (October 16), Kali Puja (November 2-3), Chhat Puja (November 7) and Christmas and New Year (December 25 and January 1, 2014).

While appealing to the organisations not to hold any agitation programmes, the Society also asserted that this part of the year is very crucial for the students as well who would be appearing for different examinations.

Meanwhile, the Central Puja Committee, Meghalaya, has also appealed to all sections of the citizenry, in Meghalaya in general and Shillong in particular, to co-operate with and support all puja committees to ensure a smooth and peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, Chhat Puja and Kali Puja in the State with usual fervor and participation of all.

Central Puja Committee, Meghalaya general secretary JL Das, in a statement issued here, informed that the festive season would commence with the CPC’s annual all faith – all religion ‘Get together of Harmony’ to be held on October 8 at the Assam Kristi Kendra, Dhankheti.

This harmony meet is organized every year by the CPC since 1994 to foster peace and harmony among all communities, caste and religion, prior to the onset of Durga Puja.
