SHILLONG: The driver of the police vehicle which was set ablaze at Lawsohtun by unknown miscreants recently has been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. Informing this here on Tuesday, East Khasi Hills superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said the driver identified as Brightstar Pde (Havildar) has been suspended for negligence of duty.

“The arson could have been prevented had the driver taken proper care of the vehicle,” Kharkrang said.

Unidentified miscreants torched the police vehicle (ML 02 0026) at Lawsohtun Block 4 (near ice factory) here on September 29. The vehicle, driven by Pde, was parked by the roadside when the incident took place.

This was not the first police vehicle that was burnt in the wake of the law and order situation in the state, following the demand of ILP by the pressure groups.

Recently, a government vehicle (Scorpio ML 02 0437) allotted to the IGP (CID), BR Rana was partially burnt when unknown miscreants hurled two petrol bombs at the former’s residence at Macabe Road, 4th Furlong.

However, police have not fixed responsibility on anyone for the lapses which resulted in the attack on Rana’s vehicle on September 27.
