SHILLONG: The PHE department is carrying out a detailed study on the possibilities of preparing a programme to clean the various tributaries leading to the Wahumkhrah river.

“At the moment, the department is preparing the concept of the programme to clean the tributaries of the Wahumkhrah River,” Deputy Chief Minister in charge PHE department Prof RC Laloo informed here on Tuesday.

Prof Laloo observed that there have been attempts from time to time by many organizations to clean the Wahumkhrah River.

“But I am of the view that it is impossible to clean the Wahumkhrah River unless there is an attempt to clean its tributaries,” Prof Laloo said.

Stating that even if they were unable to clean the Wahumkhrah River, in the sense of making the water fit for human consumption, he added that officers have been directed that the target would be to make the water crystal clear. When asked whether the Water Resources department has already submitted a proposal to the Centre about the project to clean the Wahumkhrah River, Prof Laloo said that the proposed initiative of the PHE department has no connection to the project of the Water Resources department.

“In fact not only Wahumkhrah, they are also coming up with similar kinds of programme for cleaning the Myntdu River in Jaintia Hills,” he added.
