Delhi Half Marathon to be held on Dec 15

New Delhi: The ninth edition of the Delhi Half Marathon will be held in the capital on December 15. The registration for the 2013 edition of ADHM, the world’s most prestigious half marathon, was declared open at the lauch of the event at a city hotel here on Thursday. Besides the Half Marathon, the race day has been packed with features like the Great Delhi Run, the Senior Citizen’s Run and the Wheelchair Run. The DHM, to be held under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India, will have an additional prize purse of $7,500 (Rs 4.63 lakh) for new course records. The Indian course record holders will also receive a bonus of Rs 1 lakh each. (PTI)

Indian campaign ends in individual archery

New Delhi: Deepika Kumari crashed out of the World Championships as India’s campaign in both recurve and compound individual events ended on Thursday in Belek, Turkey. None of the Indian archers, except Rajat Chauhan in men’s compound event, could go beyond the Round of 16 in the individual events in the men’s and women’s sections. The Indians, however, are in the fray in the team events. India’s best bet for a medal, Deepika suffered a disappointing 2-6 loss to Mexico’s London Olympics bronze medallist Mariana Avitia in the women’s individual recurve event. Veteran Dola Banerjee performed better, getting past Round of 32 with a 6-0 thrashing of Lisa Unruh of Germany. Unfortunately, Dola was up against the top archer, Korea’s Bo Bae Ki, who humiliated her 6-0 in the pre-quarterfinal. (PTI)

Sehwag, Gambhir fail again for India A

Shimoga (KARNATAKA): Virender Sehwag’s experiment to bat in the middle-order did not yield any favourable result while Gautam Gambhir’s woeful run of form continued as India A reached 191 for three at stumps on the second day of their second first-class match against West Indies A here on Thursday. After West Indies A scored a decent 406 in their first innings, opener Gambhir (11) and No. 4 Sehwag (7) played atrocious shots off left-arm spinner Veeraswamy Permaul’s (2/60) bowling to get back to the cooler confines of the dressing room. Unheralded Kerala opener Vasudevan Jagadeesh showed a lot of temperament as he remained undefeated on 79 in the company of in-form Abhishek Nayar, who again showed his utility with an useful 56. Gangjee, Kapur tied 18th in Taiwan

Tamsui (Taiwan): Rahil Gangjee and Shiv Kapur were the best Indians with cards of one-over 73 each on a day when blustery conditions held the spotlight on the opening round of the Taiwan Masters here on Thursday. With only six players shooting under par, and another 11 carding even par 72, Gangjee and Kapur were tied for 18th place, while the other Indians were further down. Gaganjeet Bhullar, winner of two titles on Asian Tour last season, and Himmat Rai carded 74 each to be tied 35th and Ajeetesh Sandhu (76) was 61st and Anirban Lahiri (79) was 95th. C Muniyappa (81) was 110th and Sujjan Singh (82) was 115th. Australia’s Scott Hend took advantage of the blustery conditions by posting a three-under 69 to take the first round lead. (IANS)

Webber worries for the big guys in F1

YEONGAM: Formula One’s smaller drivers should stand up for the big guys to prevent the larger men being frozen out of the sport because of their size and weight, lanky Australian Mark Webber said on Thursday. The regulations are changing next season with the introduction of a new V6 turbocharged power unit with energy recovery systems which will weigh considerably more than the current V8 engines. At present the car and driver – in overalls – must weigh a minimum of 642 kilos but while that will go up to 692kg next year to compensate for the new unit, some drivers argue it is not enough and gives the lighter men a significant advantage. They would like a further 10kg to be added on to the combined weight. “Everybody’s been asking me why I look so skinny but you have to be skinny because it’s to your advantage to be as light as possible,” Red Bull’s Webber told reporters at the Korean Grand Prix. “It’s a car performance advantage.” (Reuters)
