Skip oily food in the morning

Workaholics tend to skip breakfast or indulge in fast food to save time. But the habit is unhealthy, says a nutritionist adding that consuming fatty and oily food is not an ideal way to start the day. Ambica Sharma, nutritionist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad, shares a list of food items that should be avoided:

– Paranthas dripping with oil or ghee are a big no. Even if you wish to eat them, avoid using excess oil and ghee and have them with curd.

– Poori-Aaloo is a common breakfast for those who stay in hostels. It is not a healthy option. If there is no other choice, use a paper or tissue to soak the excess oil in Pooris.

– Junk food like chips, fried fast food and soft drinks or sweets like candy must be avoided too. (IANS)

Why drinking red wine helps keep cancer at bay

A new study has revealed that chemical, resveratrol, which is found in red wine, remains effective at fighting cancer even after the body’s metabolism has converted it into other compounds. This is an important development, as resveratrol is metabolised very quickly and can still be taken into cells after it has been metabolised into resveratrol sulfates. Enzymes within cells are then able to break it down into resveratrol again, meaning that levels of resveratrol in the cells are higher than was previously thought. In fact, the results appeared to show resveratrol may be more effective once it has been generated from resveratrol sulfate than it is if it has never been metabolised because the concentrations achieved are higher. The team, led by University of Leicester translational cancer research expert Professor Karen Brown, administered resveratrol sulfate to mice models and were subsequently able to detect free resveratrol in plasma and a variety of tissues in the mice. This is the first direct sign that resveratrol can be formed from resveratrol sulfate in live animals, and the researchers think it may help to show how resveratrol is able to have beneficial effects in animals. The study also showed that resveratrol generated from resveratrol sulfate is able to slow the growth of cancer cells by causing them to digest their own internal constituents and stopping them from dividing. Now, app to curb your binge eating urges

A smartphone app has been developed which aims to strike at the same moment that binge eating urges occur. The app has been developed as part of two new treatments designed to help those suffering from the disorder, the Independent reported. Developed by scientists at Drexel University, the TakeControl app will track users’ individual patterns of consumption and binge eating behaviour, alerting them at times when they may be susceptible to overeating. Alongside this, small-group behavioural therapy techniques are also being created to equip patients with the psychological tools to help them benefit from the standard treatment received by those who binge eat. The app aims to break the cycle of binge eating by becoming familiar with the individual’s habits and triggers and warning them when the risk is high. Acting in a similar way to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the app will allow patients to record factors such as their multiple mood states, binge eating activity and urges, and whether or not they have eaten regular meals and taken required medication. New gadget to make warm beer history!

This may be good news for beer lovers who always had a problem with warm pints, as a remarkable new gadget is being invented that chills cans of beer to 5C in just 10 seconds. Initially the V-Tex is being unveiled as a way of reducing the need for rows of fridges in supermarkets, the Daily Star reported. However the creators Enviro-Cool are working on affordable prototypes that could be used in the home. Company founder Kelvin Hall said the team working on it have already experienced the benefits. Although the V-Tex is primarily being developed with drinks in mind, the new technology has other applications. Two models are in the pipeline; a high end version, complete with built in speakers, capable of chilling two drinks at the same time, and a cheaper version that will chill one drink and is about the size of a blender. The V-Tex compact will retail for around 800 pounds and the V-Tex domestic will cost around 250 pounds. (ANI)

Now, single jab to lower cholesterol levels by almost two-third

A new jab that offers hope to millions to lower their cholesterol by almost two-third has been successfully tested in patients. The breakthrough drug could revolutionise treatment for heart disease and stroke and could help save millions of lives a year, the Daily Express reported. The ALN-PCS injection can be given as an alternative for the one in five people who cannot take statins – the current gold-standard cholesterol-lowering drugs. But, in what marks a revolutionary new treatment option, the drug could be given in combination with a statin to produce even greater effects at cutting the artery-clogging fats. Professor Peter Weissberg, the British Heart Foundation’s medical director, said that people with extremely high cholesterol are at increased risk of a heart attack, and this approach could offer hope for those who are resistant to statins. He said that these results add to growing evidence that blocking the action of a certain protein can dramatically lower ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. (ANI)
