Three arrested for rape of school teacher

Guwahati: Teachers from various education institutions in Darrang district including college teachers on Friday staged sit-in demonstration in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district in Mangaldoi demanding security and safety of lady teachers working in various education institutions in remote areas in the wake of rape of a young school teacher in the district three days back while she was returning home from the school.

Police have so far arrested three persons including the secretary of the school run under Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) in connection with rape of the teacher of the school located in a village about 25 kilometers away from Mangaldoi town in Darrang district.

Police informed that two miscreants armed with sharp weapons threatened and raped the teacher when she was coming back from the school on foot through a secluded tea estate in the area.

She was coming back to her residence in Mangaldoi town after the school was over.

On the basis of the FIR filed by the guardians of the teacher, police immediately arrested six persons.

Two of them were identified as the culprits by the victim on being shown their photographs.

The two were identified as Muslimuddin, a watchman of Chikonmati Tea Estate and one Joinal Abedin.

Muslimuddin has been wanted by police in case in connection with a spell of earlier ethnic violence in the district.

Police also arrested the secretary of the SSA school Mustafizur Rahman for plotting crime purportedly to take revenge on the teacher who had earlier lodged complaint with the district administration about irregularities in running the school.

In view of the protests over the incident, State Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised to try appointing woman teachers in schools located within five kilometer radius of the place of their residence.
