SHILLONG: Mawlai legislator Embhahlang Syiemlieh was removed from the post of president of the UDP Mawlai Circle following a no confidence motion passed against him on Saturday.

UDP members of the Mawlai circle have elected K Basaiawmoit, the advisor of the party unit, as the new president.

The no confidence motion against Syiemlieh, who is also the local MDC, was passed during the meeting held at Indoor Sports Hall, Mawlai Mawdatbaki.

Party sources informed that though notice was circulated to Syiemlieh, he did not bother to attend the meeting.

The Circle leaders had to call the meeting of the UDP members by themselves as Syiemlieh was reluctant to call the meeting to discuss about the upcoming district council elections and other matters related to strengthening of the party.

According to UDP leaders, the MLA has been trying to keep aloof from the affairs of the party and also from the people after the Assembly election.

The leaders who spoke at the meeting also regretted that it was difficult to meet their elected representative.

The meeting expressed lack of confidence in the leadership of Syiemlieh and alleged that the legislator had failed to convene the meeting of party circle despite repeated reminders.

Though the UDP Youth Wing, Mawlai circle, had asked the party members not to attend the meeting, there was large participation of the members of the UDP circle.

General secretary of the UDP circle, M Lyngdoh, asserted that the intention of convening the meeting was not to cause any division within the party.
