56 couples tie knot in mass wedding in Shamli
Shamli: Fifty six couples, who were displaced after last month’s riots and living in a relief camp with their families, tied the knot at a mass wedding at Khurgan village of the district. The ‘nikah’ was performed in the district on Saturday for the victims displaced by the communal riots. Several people have lost their homes and were forced to live in relief camps after the Muzaffarnagar riots that claimed at least 62 lives. (PTI)
Man demands money from cops posing as DIG, Meerut
Meerut: An unknown caller posing as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Meerut Zone called up several policemen and asked them to transfer money in a bank account for his brother’s treatment, police said on Sunday. Several police personnel, including the Circle Officer (Traffic) and Superintendent of Police (Crime), received a call from an unknown number on Saturday with the caller identifying himself as DIG (Meerut) K Satyanarayan, they said. The caller gave his account number asking the policemen to transfer money to his account for his brother’s treatment. Suspecting it to be a case of crank call, the policemen called up the DIG to check the authenticity of the claim who was taken aback by the incident, police said. According to the preliminary investigations, the mobile number from which calls were made has been traced to Bihar. The police have registered cases of fraud in various police stations against the anonymous caller, police said. An inquiry has also been initiated on the order of the DIG, they said. (PTI)
Biggest oil painting in Kerala unveiled in church
Kochi: Claimed to be the biggest oil painting in Kerala, a six feet tall and nine feet wide painting of St George was today installed at a chapel near here. The painting, which occupies about 54 square feet, was unveiled at St George Chapel near the St Thomas Jacobite Church at Marika in Koothattukulam in Ernakulam District. It has been painted by Vimal Kalaniketan, an artist comfortable both with murals and oil paintings and hails from Thirumarady in the district. He took one and half months to complete the painting, that he began working on since August 15, Vimal told PTI. V J Job, who donated the painting to the church, said it was a long cherished dream of his mother and his, to present the church with a painting of St George of this size. Jacobite Metropolitan Mathews Mar Ivanious blessed the painting and the new chapel at a function here this morning. (PTI)
