Tripura doctor held for accidental firing
Agartala: A Tripura doctor was arrested here for “accidental” firing at a students’ hostel in the heart of the capital city, police said Sunday. No one was injured. Gynaecologist A.K. Roy fired thrice at the hostel from his revolver Saturday night, police said. “Roy fired three rounds from his .35 revolver. However, no one was hurt,” officer-in-charge of West Kotwali police station Milan Datta told IANS. Police have seized the doctor’s revolver and a sports rifle as he had violated the conditions of the arms licence. “Though Roy has claimed that the firing was accidental, it might have killed someone in the hostel where about a hundred students are lodged,” he said. Mudslides block NH-2 in Nagaland
Kohima: Continuous rainfall has caused massive mudslides blocking NH-2 between Kohima and Botsa in Nagaland, official sources said on Sunday. The mudslides on late last night has caused huge inconvienience, Additional Deputy Commissioner Chiephobozou sub-division Bodeno Mero said. She said around 60 to 70 vehicles were stranded along the stretch since this morning. An electrical post was also damaged due to mudslide and power lines were cut off in and around Botsa area to avoid any mishap. Stating that all efforts are being made to see that the highway is cleared with PWD workers put to service, she however cautioned the public travelling on NH-2 of delayed journey. She expressed fear that the mudslides would continue till the rain stopped. (PTI)
Four dead in separate accidents in Assam
Guwahati: Four people, including a child, were killed and 10 others injured in separate road accidents in Assam on Sunday. Two people were killed and eight others injured when a vegetable-carrying van collided head-on with a truck on national highway 37 in Sivsagar in eastern Assam. The vegetables were being transported from Nagaon to Sivsagar. The injured were admitted to the Sivsagar civil hospital, where the condition of two was stated to be serious. In another accident, a man was killed and two others injured when their vehicle met with a accident at Dhekiajuli in northern Assam. The injured was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH) here. In the third accident, a minor girl was hit and killed by speeding vehicle at Raha in Nagaon district on the highway. (UNI)
Nagaland police rescues kidnapped Haryana trader
Kohima: Nagaland Police rescued a kidnapped Haryana-based businessman from Mon district on Friday morning. According to official sources some Naga militants had kidnapped the businessman from the Namtola area of Sivasagar district in Assam on Wednesday for ransom. Rakesh Sharma was abducted by a group of suspected Naga militants around 4.30 pm on Wednesday, when he was on his way home in the Sonari area of Sivasagar district. Police found his two-wheeler from the Lahdoigarh in Nagaland near the Assam border on Thursday. Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Bijoy Giri Kuligum said, ‘A joint team of Assam and Nagaland police launched an operation at Yangpang Basti under Longleng district of Nagaland on Friday morning and rescued the trader. When the goons came to know about our operation, they fled the scene, leaving the abducted man behind,’ he said.Though the miscreants have not been identified, it has been confirmed that they kidnapped Sharma for ransom. However, they were unable to contact his family members, who live in Haryana. Sharma has more than nine small tea gardens in the Assam-Nagaland border area. He also deals in green tea leaves, which he collects from local small tea growers in Assam and Nagaland. However, he did not get any extortion note from any militant outfit before he was kidnapped, sources said. (UNI)
