Assam to implement special policy for female teachers’ postings

Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday formed a panel to formulate a policy for postings of female school teachers following alleged rape of a teacher in a LP school in Darrang district last week.

‘In the backdrop of an unfortunate incident involving a woman teacher at Dalgaon in Darrang district recently, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday asked Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla to constitute a three-member committee to formulate a transfer and posting policy for women school teachers to ensure their safety and congenial working conditions,’ an official statement informed.

Headed by Adviser to Chief Minister and ex-chief secretary PP Varma, the other members of the committee are Commissioner & Secretary, Elementary Education, Hemanta Narzary and Deputy Director, Elementary Education Asomi Gogoi.

The committee will submit its recommendations within a month.

A 21-year-old teacher of a LP school in Dalgaon was allegedly raped by two youths in broad daylight near a tea garden while returning from school, purportedly to avenge the teacher’s expose of a mid-day meal scam in her school. (UNI)

 

Constable rapes Bru woman in Mizoram

Aizawl: A constable of the India Reserve Police (IRP) was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly raping a physically handicapped woman of Bru community at Damparengpui in Mamit district of Mizoram, police said. The 45-year-old married woman was raped on Tuesday by Zorammawia, constable of the IRP 5th battalion, Mamit SP Rodingliana Chawngthu said. Zorammawia was also placed under suspension, he said. A Bru leader expressed fear that the incident might create problem for the ongoing Bru repatriation from Tripura.(PTI)

69 BRU families desire to return to Mizoram

Aizawl: At least 69 Bru families at three relief camps in Tripura have expressed their willingness to return to Mizoram when the second phase of repatriation begins next week, Bru Coordination Committee (BCC) said on Tuesday. “Those who have expressed their willingness to return to Mizoram were 53 families from Kaskau relief camp, 14 from Hampsapara and two from Khakchangpara relief camps,” Elvis Chorkhy, leader of Bru Coordination Committee (BCC) told PTI over phone from the Mizoram-Tripura border town of Mamit. The 69 Bru families, comprising 225 adults and 100 minors, would bear their transport costs which would be reimbursed later, he said. They would be resettled in Kanhmun, Rengdil, Chuhvel and Zawlnuam villages in Mamit district, he said. The District Core Committee on Bru Repatriation would meet tomorrow to discuss the modalities of the resumption of self-repatriation, Mamit SP Rodingliana Chawngthu said. Chawngthu said that 100 Bru families from Naisingpara and Asapara relief camps in North Tripura had been self-repatriated in the week-long process which began from September 30. The second repatriation process is likely to begin from October 16 or 17, he said. (PTI)

BJP unaware about former MP promoting NPF

Itanagar: The BJP in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday made it clear that the party was ignorant about former MP Tapir Gao’s alleged role in promotion of Naga People’s Front in Arunachal Pradesh. Reacting to the allegation by Students’ Union Movement of Arunachal (SUMA) that Gao had a role in promotion of the Naga political party in Arunachal Pradesh, the party in a statement clarified that it was unaware of Gao’s role in connection with the said allegation. “The party was in alliance with NPF in the last Assembly elections in Nagaland but not with the Arunachal Pradesh state BJP,” the party said. “Neither the party has taken up the issue of any political alliance with NPF in the state nor did it discuss the issue in any party forum. The allegation revolving around Tapir Gao is totally unknown to the state BJP and the party has nothing to do with it,” the release said. Earlier, Gao had rubbished allegations levelled against him as “baseless and unfounded”. (PTI)

Non- Karbis of Karbi Anglong form CRPC

Kohima: The non-Karbi communities both tribal and non-tribal living in Karbi Anglong district of Assam have formed an organization called Citizens Rights Protection Council (CRPC) at a meeting held recently. According to a press release issued by CRPC President A. J. Rengma today said that the objectives of the Council include protection and promotion of the rights of the ‘voiceless people’ and raise their voice against injustice committed against them. A. J. Rengma said the council was not ‘directed’ against any particular community and appealed all citizens of Karbi Anglong to come forward and join hands with CRPC. (UNI)

Thief escapes from Guwahati central jail

Guwahati: Much to the embarrassment of authorities, a petty criminal escaped from the high-security Guwahati central jail here in the wee hours today, within a couple of days of being remanded in judicial custody. Official sources said one Rajib Das, hailing from Goalpara district, managed to flee from the jail in the early hours. A massive hunt has been started to detect and re-arrest the criminal. Rajib was arrested on October 3 in the city in a theft case and was later remanded in judicial custody. The Guwahati central jail is a high security one with top ULFA, NDFB and other militant leaders lodged there previously, besides other most-wanted criminals. The jail authorities had faced embarrassment on previous occasions also over loose security measures, most recently when local news channels had played footage of a convicted person having tea at a stall outside the jail premise.
