SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State NCP has condemned the barbaric and inhuman act by miscreant who tried to set ablaze one trader, Vikash Nandwal, of Meghalaya Machineries at Motphran on Wednesday, stating that this act is tantamount to ‘murder’.

“This act is totally uncalled for and not acceptable in a civilized society like ours. The State Government and the district administration should take immediate and stringent action against the culprits involved and bring them to book as per the law,” President of NCP state unit and party legislator Sanbor Shullai said on Thursday.

He also said that such act is not only condemnable but it also brings about insecurity in the minds of the people apart from giving rise to communal disharmony among the citizens of the State.

“Such criminals should be dealt with a firm hand and nothing less than capital punishment should be the reward so that such acts of barbarism are not repeated in future,” he added.

The Meghalaya People’s Human Right Commission (MPHRC) has also strongly condemned the attack by unidentified miscreants.

“There is no justification for trying to take anybody’s life. We do not subscribe to such inhuman acts,” MPHRC secretary general Dino DG Dympep said in a statement on Thursday.

He said that he would take up the issue with the authorities to nab those involved in this crime.

Several other organizations have also condemned the attack on the trader at Motphran on Wednesday.

CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing termed the attack as an act of cowardice and said such acts cannot be tolerated in a civilized society.

BJP State general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty, while condemning the attack, said that the Government and the law enforcing agencies should have exercised greater caution considering the present situation.

He also asked the Government to increase police presence in Puja pandals to instill confidence in the minds of the people.
