MPCC to finalise candidates for LS polls today

Pala ahead in race for ticket

SHILLONG: The election committee of the State Congress will meet here on Friday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections due in 2014.

Sources on Thursday informed that the meeting, to be chaired by MPCC president DD Lapang, would also be attended by Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and other top party functionaries.

According to sources, the MPCC is likely to forward only one name each for Shillong and Tura seats to the AICC.

“The last date of forwarding of list of candidate to the AICC is October 15,” sources said.

Meanwhile, the party sources said that sitting MP Vincent H Pala is likely to be unanimous candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Besides Pala, the others who had applied for the party ticket include former MPCC president OL Nongtdu, former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope and Congress member John Kharshiing.

Sources said picture is not clear as far as Tura Parliamentary seat is concerned.

Apart from Daryl William Cheran Momin, grandson of Meghalaya’s first chief minister (late) Capt Williamson A. Sangma, others who have applied for the party ticket are sitting Salmanpara legislator Winnerson D. Sangma, Kharkutta MLA Cherak Momin, former bureaucrat Arlene M. Sangma, PCC functionary Polycarp Marak and Richard M. Marak,
