SHILLONG: The North East Postal Circle has organized several events like debate competition, customer meet, arranging visit of school children at selected post offices and Philatelic Bureau etc., to celebrate World Post Day, which falls on October 9.
On the occasion, PK Swain, Postmaster General, North East Postal Circle, extended his warmest wishes to the millions of customers of the Department of Posts and stated that the Post is truly a public service for every citizen, irrespective of one’s position in society.
World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9, the anniversary of the establishment of Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Berne.
The purpose of the World Post day is to create awareness of contribution of the postal sector to socio-economic development and nation building in the entire world.
India is one of the initial members of UPS, which is a specialized body of the United Nations with 192 members.
