JOWAI: Giving a new twist to the recent ‘suicide’ of two prisoners inside police lock-up in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills police have registered a murder case.

West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Peter S Dkhar had appointed additional district magistrate DP Kharsati to conduct an inquiry into the death of Kitbok Kassar, 24, of Mynthong, Jowai, and Daphah Rupon, 26, of Salaroh, Jowai.

Sources informed that Police have registered a murder case based on the complaint lodged by Rani Kasar, sister of Kitbok Kassar.

Confirming this, West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Herbert G Lyngdoh said a case under appropriate section of law has been registered on the basis of the complaint lodged by Rani.

The duo, along with their friend, was arrested on August 20 in connection with a theft case, and a local court had remanded them in three-day police custody.

All three accused were put in the same cell but the third accused was sleeping at the time when two of his friends allegedly committed suicide.

A police constable, who was on sentry duty, was also suspended immediately after the incident.

Though the police have already received the autopsy report which clearly stated it is a case of suicide, they (Police) are still waiting for the report from the Forensic Laboratory.
