Masked policemen patrol the city on Saturday in view of prevailing law and order situation arising out of ILP impasse.

SHILLONG: The Ri Bhoi police have arrested the publicity secretary of FKJGP’s central body on suspicion of his involvement in hurling a petrol bomb at a puja pandal at Umsning on Friday.

Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy said that police arrested Eldie Newton Lyngdoh from Umsning.

It may be mentioned that miscreants hurled three petrol bombs at a pandal constructed at Gorkha School on the first day of the festive season. Luckily they did not explode. The arrested NGO leader has been forwarded to the court.

Law and order under control, claims WJH admin: Though the law and order situation in East Khasi Hills seems to have gone for a toss, the situation in West Jaintia Hills is relatively better with few cases of arson being reported in the district.

West Jaintia Hills SP Herbert Lyngdoh said that the district police are on full alert to avoid any untoward incident in the district. So far seven cases of attempt to arson have been reported from the district since the time when talks between the 10 NGOs and State Government over implementation of ILP failed.

Police have arrested one person in connection with the case of arson.

The SP said the district police have intensified patrolling in the district to oversee the law and order arrangement.

Earlier, miscreants attempted to set ablaze the Office of Range Officer, Soil & Water Conservation Range at Thadlaskein, West Jaintia Hills and a rearing house of the Sericulture Department at Moodymmai village was set on fire by unknown miscreants.

Miscreants on September 10 even attempted to set on fire the veterinary dispensary at Thad-Muthlong, West Jaintia Hills.

To a query about the need for additional forces in the district, the SP said at the moment police is capable of handling the situation and does not foresee any grave law and order problem in the district.
