2 NDFB(S) men involved in NHPC GM’s kidnapping held

Tezpur: Two linkmen of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB)-Songbijit faction who allegedly helped in the abduction of NHPC General Manager Anil Kumar Agarwal on September 21 last have been arrested, police said on Friday. The two linkmen – Sureng Hajoary and Raju Basumatary – arrested on Thursday in the district had given information to the abductors on Agarwal, Sonitpur Superintendent Police Arabinda Kalita said. So far five persons have been arrested in connection with the abduction of the NHPC official, Kalita said. Assam Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury who recently held a meeting here with the police officials regarding the rescue of Agarwal instructed that the operations be intensified, he added. Assam police in association with its Arunachal Pradesh counterpart has launched a special operation to rescue the abducted General Manager, kidnapped from 12 Mile area near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border under Charduar police station in Sonitpur district as he was coming from Tawang to Guwahati. Agarwal is originally from Faridabad in Haryana and was posted at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh for the last one year. There are two hydro-electric power projects in Tawang – Chu-I and Chu–II. Agarwal is the General Manager of the Chu-I project. (PTI)

Congress candidate wins by-poll unopposed in Arunachal

Itanagar: Gum Tayeng of Congress was declared elected unopposed in the bypoll from Dambuk (ST) Assembly Constituency under Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh following withdrawal of nomination by lone Independent candidate Mulluku Tacho on Thursday.The seat fell vacant after the death of retired state’s first IAS officer and former MLA Jomin Tayeng recently.The Election Commission had fixed October 31 as the day of polling.However, following withdrawal of candidature by the only Independent candidate, the EC has declared Mrs Gum Tayeng, widow of Jomin Tayeng, elected. With her victory the strength of the ruling Congress is 55 in the 60-member Assembly. (UNI)

Police firing in Assam; one killed, two injured

Morigaon (Assam): A man was killed and two others were injured when police opened fire at a mob attacking a police outpost at Boribazar in Morigaon district, police said on Friday. The trouble started when police arrested six persons after supporters of the winning and losing teams of a local football match clashed with each other on Thursday. To control the mob, demanding release of the six arrested persons, police resorted to lathicharge followed by firing in which three persons were seriously injured. One of the injured identified as Mujibur Rahman (38) succumbed to his wounds on way to Morigaon Civil Hospital, police said. Protesting the incident and claiming Rahman as its member, CPI Morigaon unit has called a 12-hour district bandh from 6 AM on Friday evoking partial response.(PTI)
