An ardent disciplinarian, she was instrumental in developing the city based Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture (SAIIC) in its formative years as her life was full of activities and challenges.

She has participated in various freedom movement activities through Surma Valley Cultural Squad (SVCS) that showcased the plight of Indians then under British rule. She was also closely associated with the Indian People Theatrical Association (IPTA).

She joined Pine Mount School in 1959 when it started the Bengali department and retired in 1991. Lahiri was married to Binoy Lahiri, a freedom fighter, revolutionary and was the CPI secretary.
