SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills Police on Friday managed to crack the Mawsynram arson case with the arrest of a temporary employee of the MeECL office at Mawsynram, who took advantage of the current situation to destroy evidence of him being involved in misappropriating the office funds.

The arrested person identified as Andy Blah (32) of Mawsynram is a temporary bill clerk.

Police informed that Blah claimed that he had misappropriated only Rs 3000.

“At present, we cannot give the exact amount misused by the accused. We are still investigating to find out the total amount misappropriated in this regard and to find out whether or not more people are involved in the crime,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said.

It was on Tuesday morning when unknown miscreants burnt down several important documents including ledgers and bills of the office of Assistant Executive Engineer, MeECL Sub Division at Mawsynram.

The police chief said that by committing the arson, the accused intended to destroy evidence of misappropriation and put the blame on the pro-ILP groups.
