Editor,
I write this letter not to criticize, but as a responsible citizen to build the confidence of the people with each other for the good of the State. I cannot help but compare the government and the legislators to a football match, where the C.M., Dr. Mukul Sangma is the captain of one team and he is playing in the Center Forward (C.F) position. The opposing team is a very experienced one and they are a tough lot.
When the whistle blows each team tries to gain control of the ball. The C.F. will shoot the ball to the left or right wing, accurately aiming to reach his teammate, who similarly will react passing the ball to his own teammates. Meantime the C.F. will try to possess the ball to go to the goal to score. The game goes on excitedly with every player grabbing a chance to score. Should the C.F. try to go alone and he dribbles the ball by himself, the full backs of the opposing team, like sharks, blocking him and he’s stuck and nothing is achieved. The point I wish to emphasize here is that governance is not an individual effort and that the CM is not the only one but he has his colleagues, the legislators, to team up with him. He should not be selfish but place his confidence on them to carry on the duties allotted to each of them. Some may be better and performance is excellent.
But now it is not so. It appears that the CM is trying to run a one man show. He is rushing helter-skelter from pillar to post inaugurating a fishery scheme, dashing off to lay a foundation stone or open a school or craft center, etc,.  Most often he is not in the state or even in the country, he has no breathing space; even for a cup of tea. I do admire his energy and drive. Why doesn’t he give the legislators some part which they would only be too pleased to perform? He would do well to repose more faith in his team mates to ensure that his team scores enough goals to merit applause. Sharing in Governance is very welcome and he should do this to be successful. I am sure the public will be happy to see a Government that performs well.
Yours etc.’

Spare the students

Editor,
Through this letter, I request the pro-ILP NGOs, who are on an agitational path kindly to refrain from resorting to agitations, which will affect the student community. Their sudden and unexpected bandh call on the 17th October 2013 left hundreds of NIOS students who are appearing for their secondary and senior secondary board examinations shocked and upset. Although the NGOs did ask the NIOS students to attend their examinations on that day, who would dare to defy a bandh call and risk one’s safety or how would students reach their examination centres as far as Kendriya Vidyalaya, NEHU and Upper Shillong to name a few centres, even if they were brave enough to defy the bandh?. The examination of these students which started on the 7th October 2013 will continue till the middle of November and if students missed any paper for any reason whatsoever, do you think NIOS, Delhi will hold special examinations for the students of Meghalaya?. In addition, some schools are having their pre- board selection examinations and these too will be hampered even if they could be rescheduled as compared to examinations conducted by NIOS, Delhi.
And the bandh call announced by the HNLC for 21st and 22nd October 2013 will have the same adverse effect. Who then will be responsible for the waste in time, money and efforts put in by the students?. What about the thousands of students looking forward to the 22nd for their convocation?. Wouldn’t they miss out on something which they had been eagerly waiting for all their lives?.
Will the NGOs and HNLC listen? What about the Government? What has it done to ensure that the public can travel safely and what are the modes of travel available in the event of bandhs? I fail to see any public (government) vehicle even if I wished to defy bandh calls.
Yours etc,
A concerned parent.
