Onion prices hit Rs 100 mark in Guwahati markets

GUWAHATI: Century on the cricket field bring cheer, century in an institute’s or person’s life brings celebrations but a unique century in Guwahati is bringing tears for the people. If peeling onions didn’t bring tears to one’s eyes, the price will definitely make one cry here. Onion prices recorded an all-time high in Guwahati, touching Rs 100 a kilogram, prompting a direct market intervention from the state government. The prices of onion were hovering between Rs 55 and Rs 60 since August. However, it gradually scaled up to touch Rs 100 in the last couple of days despite prediction of a fall after the arrival of fresh crop from Nasik. Market sources said the situation has emerged from supply shortage and the unrestrained trade practice of taking undue advantage in the festive season. However, reports indicated a huge gap between wholesale and retail rates, pointing at prevalence of unfair trade practices. Meanwhile, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has decided to sell onions at the wholesale rate through 60-odd notified fair price shops called ‘Amar Dokan’ from Saturday. Wholesalers have agreed to provide onion at the rate of Rs 56 per kg to such shops and the common people could buy it at the rate of Rs 59 per kg. (UNI)
