25 hurt as Tripura-bound bus turns turtle in East Jaintia Hills

JOWAI: Three persons were killed and 25 others were injured when a Tripura-bound night bus went off the road in East Jaintia Hills district at 12:10 am on Wednesday.

The deceased are identified as Mahesh Deori (25) of Uttaranagar village under Udalgiri District in Assam, Dumar Kirki (23) and Md. Matiur Rahman (25). Deori died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at District Government Hospital at Ialong village.

The ill-fated bus (AS01EC-0154), which was on its way from Guwahti to Dharmanagar in Tripura, turned turtle and fell into a stream at a place called Takhniang between Kongong of Wapungshnong and Tuber Khmaishnong village. However, Deori’s wife and his one-and-a-half-year-old child survived with minor injuries.

According to sources, 12 injured were discharged from Khliehriat CHC after giving first aid. 18 others were rushed to Ialong District Hospital out of which two persons died soon after reaching the hospital.

It is learnt that the accident took place after driver lost control of the vehicle on a turning when he tried to avoid a head on collision with a truck coming from the opposite direction. The driver lost control of the bus and fell into the stream.
