Editor,
Apropos Daisy Kharkongor’s letter (ST Oct 21, 2013) captioned, “Why Lanong keeps missing the bus” many of us are amazed at the reaction of the writer on the ILP article by B M Lanong, published in your daily on 19th October, 2013. Lanong being a seasoned politician of integrity and a noted lawyer had prepared a very informative article based on facts and figures on the ILP particularly on the legal and constitutional aspects of the ILP position today in the 3 ILP-driven states of Arunachal, Mizoram &Nagaland. The article is fairly balanced, lucid and precise.
Readers deserve to know how UDP perpetrates violence in the state through devious means as claimed by Daisy. This absurd statement exposes her ignorance of facts and her irresponsible attitude as a person who enters the media regularly to interact on public issues. Daisy’s mischievous attempts to discredit Lanong as being the Chief Architect of the present chaos and mayhem, is a desperate attempt of a sycophant who tries to shift the responsibility from one to the other, with the intent of exacting benefit from the actual perpetrator of this situation, who wields power. It was not Lanong who wanted the ILP, but the NGOs who were members of the HLC constituted by Dr. Mukul Sangma, who appointed Lanong as chairman. In her wild attitude of aggressive rage against Lanong, whom she attributes as Brutus and her veiled attempt to cover up the follies of her Caesar, Daisy finally tried to fully distort the writing of Lanong by misinterpreting the word ” crap” from the subject matter, written by some writers that Lanong reacted to the object i.e. the non – indigenous community. This is totally mean and dubious indeed.

The politics at play in Meghalaya
Editor,
The tug-of-war between the government and the oppositions (NGOs) has made the public the sacrificial lambs. The desperate attempts of the opposition parties to destabilize the Mukul (Sangma) government is pathetic and crooked. Clearly, the opposition are at their wits end. First it was the influx issue and the demand for ILP, which was democratic. Then the ST issue of the CM came up as a legal tactic. Now we have bandhs and arson which is neither democratic nor civilized. In the meanwhile the influx issue has turned into an anti non-tribal issue. Well this is an opportune moment for the KSU to play the politics of fear. It is a reminder to the public that KSU is not a mere students’ organisation fighting for a cause. As such no attempts should be made to disturb their scrupulous intents. But in doing so, the NGOs have left negative notions about the tribal identity. Their actions have equated the tribal identity to that of violence and barbarism. If the effort to keep our tribal identity requires hooliganism and animalism it is better to forego that tribal identity and live a peaceful and civilized life.
On the other hand the Government has equally shown that it is incapable, ineffective, cowardly and spineless. The way the current issues in Meghalaya are handled has allowed the opportunistic groups to be loud and mindless. Their policy of wait and watch has made even the intellectuals and the public insecure and silent.
For all the Christian faithful and our religious leaders who have no moral fiber to stand up for our neighbours the least politics we could play is ask for President’s Rule in Meghalaya. In the meanwhile the majority community can live peacefully as it doesn’t matter that a handful of people dictates terms to them.
And lastly, to non-tribals all I can say is: “Dear countrymen run not, for communal politics is the politics of our Indian politicians and no state is safe from it either.
