Congestion hits movement on NH-44 in Jaintia Hills
SHILLONG: A series of accidents on Wednesday led to day-long traffic chaos all along the MES road at Rilbong Point to Upper Shillong and Mawlai.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang, various accidents along this area resulted in a heavy jam all along this stretch of NH-40, between MES and 3rd Mile and MES and Mawlai.
First there was an accident between a BSF bus and a maruti car, then the tyre of a truck punctured and later, a maruti car broke down in the middle of the road. Later, two cars were hit by a truck followed by another accident in which one truck capsized. All these incidents occurred on the highway from MES towards Upper Shillong.
Besides, another accident took place near Mahari petrol Pump, Mawlai, involving a dumper and a maruti car.
Citing additional reasons that led to the traffic chaos on Wednesday, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem said that a three-day gap from Sunday (holiday) till Tuesday (36-hour bandh), prompted people from all corners especially the rural areas to come to Shillong, and everybody was in a hurry to reach their destination on time.
Heavy traffic jam in Jaintia Hills
Meanwhile, the two districts of East and West Jaintia Hills was hit by a heavy traffic jam on Wednesday in several places all along National Highway NH-44 from Jowai to Khliehriat, informed our Jowai correspondent.
On Wednesday morning, the traffic jam started from Phramer- Tubershohshrieh, Kongong, Mookhep and Ladrymbai.
People including governments official traveling from Jowai to attend their offices at Khliehriat reached the destination in four hours instead of the regular one hour.
Traffic jam again both the districts in the evening from Lad-Sutnga and continued to Ladrymbai. There were also severe traffic jams on Mookhep-Wapungskur, Tuberkmai Shnong-Phramer and Ialong areas.
Thousands of coal laden trucks and trucks transporting good and other commodities were seen plying on the highway. The number of trucks that crossed the district on Wednesday was far greater than on other days.
