Wangala Fest from Nov 7-9

TURA: Preparations are afoot for the 36th Hundred Drum Wangala Festival to be held from November 7 to 9, 2013 at Asananggre, 18 km from Tura, the headquarters of West Garo Hills district.

The Wangala is the biggest post-harvest festival of the Garos and is a thanksgiving ceremony to the deity Misi Saljong also known as the Pattigipa-Ra·rongipa or the Great Giver for the rich harvest of the season.

Besides the usual rituals like the Rugala, Sa’sat So·a and the grand Hundred Drums Wangala dance by the ten dancing troupes on the last day, the highlights of the three-day festival will include indigenous games, cultural competitions and handicrafts exhibition and this year for the first time there will be Master Chef on the spot indigenous cooking competition on Nov 7, being sponsored by SBI.
