Police: Ready to meet challenges

SHILLONG: Though banned proscribed rebel outfit HNLC is trying to make a comeback by calling bandhs, the State police is all geared up to thwart any attempt by the outfit to raise its ugly head.

Talking to a group of journalists here on Thursday, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) M Kharkrang said, “We need to ensure that they (HNLC) don’t raise their heads again.”

The statement of Kharkrang came days after the militant outfit called for a 36-hour bandh to protest the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to the State.

Reacting to a query, he admitted presence of a few overground workers and linkmen of the outfit in the district and said that police were keeping a tab on all the HNLC cadres, who are out of jail on bail, so that “they do not indulge in any anti-social activity.”

The militant outfit, which operates from across the border, has now become very active on the social networking site “Facebook” through which it disseminates various information and announcements.

“We are working on to track the location from where the outfit disseminates information,” Kharkrang said.

Arrest of FKJGP leader: Kharkrang defended police action to book FKJGP leader Eldie N Lyngdoh under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention (MPDA) Act.

“Lyngdoh was booked under MPDA since miscreants were creating law and order problems on his behest,” he said.

Lyngdoh was arrested by Ri Bhoi police for his involvement in throwing petrol bomb at a puja pandal in Umsning.

The FKJGP leader is currently lodged at Williamngar district jail .

According to Kharkrang, police can impose MPDA against any miscreant based on the investigation.

Lyngdoh is the only NGO leader so far who has been booked under MPDA.

On law and order situation, Kharkrang said, “At the moment, one battalion of CrPF is assisting the state police in maintenance of law and order in the district including the capital city.

“Our co-ordination is very good with them,” Kharkrang added.
