SHILLONG: The Office of the District Agriculture Officer, East Khasi Hills, on Thursday organized a one-day training programme at Tyrna Village under Sohra Sub-Division, as part of the celebration of World Food Day with the theme ‘Sustainable food systems for food security and nutrition’.

The programme was chaired by P Lynrah, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer, Sohra.

KD Kharkongor, District Training Officer, Shillong, in his speech stressed on the need for sustainable rice production in order to meet the demands of an increasing population.

Since the Sub-Division has potential for double cropping of paddy, awareness and stress is being given to encourage Boro Paddy cultivation by utilizing the efforts put up by the Government to meet the water requirement through interventions like construction of check dam, shallow tube wells etc.

Interactions with farmers during the training programme revealed that majority of farmers cultivate paddy for their own consumption and only a few engage in sale of rice.

Elaborating on the theme of the World Food Day, L Kharkrang, Research Officer, emphasized the need of sustainable food production by stressing the importance of soil health management and maintenance of local varieties of seeds by mobilizing packages for good seed production.
