The KHADC has sought the support from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in setting up of a cultural centre-cum-tourist lodge at Mawphlang.

“We want to set up an amphitheatre, a library and a museum in the proposed cultural centre to facilitate activities ranging from arts, literature, music, dance and theatre with the lodging facilities for tourists,” KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngaiñ N Syiem said in a memorandum submitted to Union Tribal Affairs Minister Kishore Chandra Deo here on Friday.

The KHADC CEM also urged the Ministry for awarding an annual grant-in-aid for organizing annual ‘Monolith Festival’.

He said “This festival is not only about conservation and promotion of the Khasi heritage and culture, but this festival is also a platform to revive, advocate and enrich the indigenous knowledge on agriculture, human and animal healthcare, food preparation, education, natural resource management, social interaction , environment and ecology among many others”.

The KHADC CEM said the Council would also need the support from the Ministry in terms of financial assistance to expand this initiative for providing an alternative source of income to people who are engaged in non-agricultural activities.
